A pulpotomy is a common dental procedure often referred to as a “baby root canal,” though it is much simpler and less invasive than the adult version. When a cavity becomes deep enough to reach the soft inner tissue of a tooth, known as the pulp, it can cause significant pain or even lead to an abscess. During a pulpotomy, the dentist removes the infected portion of the pulp from the crown (the visible part of the tooth) while leaving the healthy “living” pulp in the roots intact.
The primary goal of this treatment is to save the primary (baby) tooth. While it might seem easier to simply pull a tooth that is eventually going to fall out, baby teeth serve as vital placeholders for permanent teeth. Losing a baby tooth too early can cause surrounding teeth to shift, leading to crowding and alignment issues later on. By performing a pulpotomy, the dentist clears out the decay, medicates the area to prevent further infection, and maintains the tooth’s structural integrity.
What to Expect During the Procedure
To ensure your child stays comfortable, the area is thoroughly numbed, and if needed, we can utilize sedation options like nitrous oxide. Once the infected tissue is removed and the area is sterilized, the tooth is filled with a therapeutic material and usually covered with a stainless steel crown. This crown provides a durable seal that protects the weakened tooth from breaking until it is naturally ready to wiggle out on its own. It is a quick, routine way to get your child out of pain and keep their smile on track!
